A conversation with my fiancée
So it would appear that poker is now too pervasive an influence in my life. Last night as we were falling asleep (and my fiancée was likely half asleep – she didn’t remember this conversation in the morning) we had the following exchange:
Her: What do you want for dinner tomorrow?
Me: Options?
Her: Check.
…
Me: ?
Her: Or bet.
…
Her: I’ll make chicken stir fry.

Truthfully I’ve been struggling with poker lately. To some extent at the tables, but it extends beyond that (e.g., blogging regularly). I find myself mired in uncertainty as to my next steps in poker (as mentioned in my December 2008 Goals). For the past year my objective has been very clear – improve my poker game and try to escape from the high rake low limits.
Now I find myself in a place where I have more options. I could continue to try and move up, I could grind a lot of hands at 5/10, or I could expand to other games (and there are myriad options there – heads up play, no limit, Omaha, etc.). In many ways it’s exciting to have gotten to a point where I am allowed these options. At the same time I know I am facing new territory, and that is frightening in it’s own way.
Part of me feels that I just need to make the decision – that there is no one ‘right’ answer and that wasting an excessive amount of time trying to figure it out is the only real error I can make. In other words, NOT making a decision is far worse than choosing any possible path.
That said, do not dismay, dear reader. PygmyHero is not lost (perhaps I should just switch my Full Tilt Poker avatar to the confused elephant). My spirit remains unbroken and my resolve is undiminished. I just don’t know quite where to direct them at the moment.

Villain really surprised me here with an unexpected holding and a flop raise that I really don’t understand. On the river I thought his range would consist entirely of Jx, 7x, pocket pairs, and flopped gutshots (which all either made a straight or a pair on the river). I felt all of those hands would value bet except for possibly some low pocket pairs, so it seemed like a good opportunity to check/raise my rivered full house here.
January 2009 Goals
I had a lot of fun making my goals last month, and feel that it was very beneficial. So I’m going to be setting a lot more goals this month and seeing how it goes.
More Hands
I’m not going to set a specific numeric goal here, rather my goal is just to do things that should cause me to play more hands. I’m going to try and play sessions earlier in the day (hopefully allowing more evening sessions) and have more short sessions where I play for around an hour, take a break, and come back for more.
DeucesCracked Videos
One of the negative effects of all the hand history review I did last month was that I didn’t watch as many DeucesCracked videos as I usually do. I’m going to try to rectify that this month, especially because I feel the new season’s lineup is really strong. Again, I’m not going to choose a specific number here, but I think a video every other day or so would be good.
Secret HQ
I’m going to be very active in the new Mid Stakes LHE team:Minbettors Anonymous.
TiltBlocker
In an effort to be less focused on my results I have reconfigured my Hold ‘em Manager Heads Up Display so that it covers up my stack. Because I am usually one tabling I’ll probably still have some idea of how I’m doing, but I won’t be able to see exactly how much I am winning or losing.
Working on my Fitness
I have a prop bet of sorts with the wagon. If I can meet the below fitness goals he will assist the Small Stakes LHE team (of which I am not a member) with some free coaching. I obviously won’t meet these goals this month as I believe they’re pretty extreme (to the point that I’m not sure if I can ever meet them), but I will be working very hard on it as getting some help for the Small Stakes team is very important to me.

*Pull ups don’t have to be done continuously, but I cannot come back to the ground before completion.
**This is at the climbing gym and consists of 3-4 minutes of dead hands and 30+ pull ups in 10 minutes.
I will not have to complete all tasks on the same day.
HUHU
I’m going to try and work on some heads up play this month. For starters I’ll be joining in the HULA tournament forming at DeucesCracked. I’ll also be leaning on my team members for assistance via HUHU play and Game Creation.
Email
I’m so bad at answering email. I just need to respond in less than a month.
Blog Improvements
I have some plans for this year. For starters I’m going to re-organize the categories and tags (now that I understand better how they should be used). I have to do this before the blog gets bigger and this task becomes impossible. I’m also hoping to add to my blogroll, including a review of the sites I add.

On the flop I was debating a 3-bet as he could have a big draw (gutshot plus flush draw) and I didn’t want to turn to get checked through. But I felt this player’s aggression numbers indicated that he was not likely to take a free river card with a hand like that.

Decemeber 2008 Goals Recap
My goals for last month can be found here.
The Gratitude Journal
This was the most unique goal I had and it ended up being a a really interesting experiment. I tried to jot some notes into a Word file every morning shortly after I woke so that I could start the morning out on a positive note. Some mornings I forgot, which resulted in me thinking about my life and gratitude during mundane times: on the train, while walking to work, while making dinner, etc. I failed to write every single day, but I still feel that this was a really worthwhile activity.
I’m not going to write out the whole list, but here’s a few of the things I wrote about: my fiancée (seven times), my friends, DeucesCracked (a number of times, including a few specific individuals), my coach Entity, my job, karma, and oddly enough, the price of gas (it really was cool to fill up my tank for <$20 for the first time in years).
After a few days I made a more elaborate entry into the journal which I’d like to share here:
An interesting thing happened today. So far I’ve had no problems being grateful and making my daily entries. But I haven’t really been elaborating. That’s not because I don’t have more to say – it’s just that I haven’t typed it for whatever reason.
But today my brain got a bit out of hand. I thought about gratitude during my shower, my commute, and on my walk to work. I thought of literally a ton of things that I’m grateful and it was just this huge spiral where I kept thinking of more and more things. It was almost like I was building up a stock of grateful things.
But really I won’t use those unless I am particularly grateful that exact day (since I think that’s kind of a condition of this experiment). But I do think that the experiment is working – I mean, isn’t the whole point to make me focus on the positives and be happy about my life?
That pretty much sums up my thoughts on the validity and benefits on the gratitude journal. I did miss a number of days in the latter part of the month. Again, from my journal:
Partly I was too busy, partly I was too forgetful, and partly I’ve been feeling not particularly grateful as a large part of this month has been pretty tough on me (see my previous post, and let’s be honest – the holidays can be a difficult time of year). I’ve decided to not make post-dated journal entries as that seems contrary to the point of this activity – I was supposed to feel grateful each and every day, not make a laundry list of good things.
Despite that, I think things went very well. Probably shy of a resounding success, but the bottom line is that I think writing the journal improved the quality of my life.
What am I doing?
I don’t know. The good news is that my videos on Poker Stars and Full Tilt Poker (which, to be fair, was already out before this month). The bad news is that I have not yet completed the final video, which will compare the two.
At the same time, I have been thinking about my poker future, as well as discussing it with a number of other DeucesCracked members. Although I have not reached any conclusions, I think I have made some progress in this area.
Out of Game Analysis
I pretty much kicked butt in this area. I reviewed a ton of hands in Hold ‘Em Manager in a timely manner and didn’t let them pile up. I even worked with Poker Stove a bit, which is always educational.

December 2008 Recap – rumors of a swong

December 2008
First of all I’m very pleased with the number of sessions, hours, and hands I was able to put in over the course of December, especially since I took a fair amount of time off from poker during the holiday season. It was really important to me to continue playing despite how busy everything gets at that time of year.
Results-wise this was clearly not the best month. It was bad enough that at one point a DeucesCracked coach (someone other than my coach Entity) contacted me just to see if I was doing okay. Apparently they had looked up my results in a hand history tracking database site and saw a somewhat precipitous decline over the past month or two.
However, this graph makes things look a little bit worse than they actually are. I lost 25 big bets during my heads up dabble, and 25 more during the second DeucesCracked limit hold ‘em home game. Both of those losses occurred at lower stakes than my normal game (mostly $5/$10 with some $8/$16 mixed in), so had less impact on my bankroll than this graph would indicate.
But more importantly, if I look at a graph with about twice as many hands the above trend would be almost perfect mirrored by a rise on the left side. So while I am on the unpleasant side of variance at the moment, a better perspective may be that I am in an ~10,000 hand break-even stretch. Which is really in no way remarkable or rare.
In other words, Tommy Angelo was correct when he wrote in Elements of Poker:
26. Winning, Losing, and Breaking Even
“What this means is that the answer to, “Are you winning, losing, or breaking even?” is always “Since when?”
And since I can answer “winning” to many “since when’s,” there’s really no reason to worry about one month in which I am “losing.” More from Tommy.
Away from the tables I had a great end of the month and I feel refreshed and energized. I am confident about my prospects for the new year. Maybe I’ll even get to check / raise the river!
