Hand Analysis

Posted in Poker Hands at 7:41 am by pygmyhero

I WILL be revealing the results of this hand after my analysis, so choose how quickly and how far you want to scroll down. They will be at the very end of the post.

UTG is a standard loose passive player.
CO is a pretty standard TAG so he’ll have a fairly wide iso-raising range here.
BTN is fairly loose passive PF, but actually super aggressive post flop when given the opportunity.

Pre Flop: (1.5 SB) Hero is BB with Q of hearts 3 of hearts
UTG calls, 1 fold, CO raises, BTN calls, 1 fold, Hero calls, UTG calls

Flop: (8.5 SB) 5 of hearts Q of diamonds 4 of spades (4 players)
Hero checks, UTG checks, CO checks, BTN bets, Hero calls, UTG calls, CO folds

Turn: (5.75 BB) K of hearts (3 players)
Hero checks, UTG checks, BTN checks

River: (5.75 BB) 5 of spades (3 players)
Hero checks, UTG checks, BTN bets, Hero calls, UTG folds

I think PF is pretty standard here – I’m basically getting 7:1 more or less closing the action and I really want to get in the pot against the bad players.

I considered check/raising the the flop but was surprised when CO did not cbet. BTN betting is a whole different matter – based on my read he does NOT have to have a hand here. Given how dry the board was I decided I didn’t mind just calling and allowing the players behind me to peel cheaply. UTG is very unlikely to have a hand with any real equity against me (he is likely drawing to running cards), and will often call for one bet, but fold for two. I really doubt CO has AK here given his flop check, so I think at best he has a one overcard hand. Given the pot size I guess technically I want him to fold that type of hand (which he is much more likely to do if I raise), but I feel that’s outweighed by the fact that he might call with less, including hands that are drawing very thin like 88 (and he might fold Kx for one bet anyway given how multiway it is).

On the turn I have a lot of options and I think leading out is viable here. However, I thought both of my opponents had very weak hand ranges and would not be able to call often. Obviously I think they are calling with any pair and picked up hearts – I just don’t think they’re nearly that strong. Although I think the possibility is remote, if I am behind I still have decent equity with my flush redraw, but in that case I do not want to pile money into the pot. As my read is that BTN will often bet when shown passivity I elected to check/call again. I still don’t think I mind having UTG come along.

When the turn gets checked through I am basically 100% sure I have BTN beaten. When UTG checks the river it certainly looks like he does not have a K or trips. Thus my river options are either to lead and hope UTG has a 4 or some small pocket pair, and/or that BTN has some random calling hand (ace high I guess), or to check and try to induce BTN again. As BTN has basically confirmed that he has nothing, but has shown the tendency in the past to bluff when checked to, I felt inducing was best. Also, I felt UTG would call about the same range for one bet whether I led into him or if he was overcalling, so I am not missing value from him regardless of which line I take (with the exception being when UTG has a calling hand but BTN checks back, but I regard that parley as somewhat remote).

Results below:

Final Pot: 7.75 BB
Hero shows Q of hearts 3 of hearts (two pair, Queens and Fives)
BTN shows 7 of spades 9 of spades (a pair of Fives)
Hero wins 7.5 BB
(Rake: $1.00)

I haven’t really posted any hands lately, so I thought I’d just toss one out there for fun. I’m not playing a ton of hands right now, mostly because the end of the year is such a busy time. But in The Elephant Tamer we have moved up to the 2/4 level, so I’ve been trying to make sure I’m still familiar with those games and how they’re playing.

Entity teased me in a recent DeucesCracked video about my general inability to check/raise the river. :) I guess I don’t get full credit here as I didn’t get paid off, but I think my river play is pretty clearly correct given the number of busted draws in villain’s range that can’t call a bet and may bluff if I check.

Blog Updates

Posted in Poker tagged at 12:58 pm by pygmyhero

In the last week I have been working diligently to update a few aspects of this blog. When I started blogging last year I wasn’t really sure what I’d write about. I didn’t even really understand how Tags and Categories functioned! As I have continued to write I have developed a more clear idea of how I want to organize my posts and what purpose I want this blog to serve.

I realize the casual reader probably won’t notice or care about these changes, but I have revised, consolidated, and (in some cases) deleted every single category and tag in use on this blog (no small job for the over 100 posts I have accumulated since the blog’s inception). I have also updated my About page.

I am also considering changing / updating the blog’s name and tagline, though I am not sure if I want to do this. The Real Life: Microlimit Grinder idea has now been used for no limit, heads up limit, sit ‘n’ goes, and heads up no limit, but it will always have some sentimental value to me as I was the first.

A reasonable request

Posted in Poker at 10:39 am by pygmyhero

I observed a hand between two players in which Loose Player had a pair of tens, and got to the river on a KQx two spade flop, a brick spade turn (Loose Player had no spades), and then spiked a non-spade ten on the river. The other player, Tilter, obviously had a better hand prior to the river and likely had a spade in his hand (meaning Loose Player hit a one outer).

Loose Player: I take lucky any time =))
Tilter: plz shutup idiot
Tilter: did u think u were bluffing me? with reraise
Loose Player: hey, u insalt me?
Loose Player: I will leave with your $$
Tilter: lol no
Loose Player: or be nice to me

AC Fall 2009 Trip, Day 10

Posted in Poker Hands, Trip Reports tagged , , , , , , , , , , , at 9:11 pm by pygmyhero

Saturday, October 31, 2009

As our room is a bit overly crowded at times, when you get up it has been common courtesy to wake up someone who has been sleeping on the floor and get them into the bed space you vacated. When I did that this morning, the following conversation actually happened:

Me: BigBadBabar, wake up.
BBB: mmmmmm…
Me: Get up – there’s a spot on the bed.
BBB: Jizz?
Me: No. We all already agreed on the rules about that.
BBB: mmmmmm…
Me: Come on, there’s an open spot for you in the bed.
BBB: Seat open?
Me: Lock it up.

An interesting hand I played.

As it was Halloween there were a lot of pretty wild costumes in the casino. Not so much in the poker room, though one of the floormen did dress up as a Borgata Babe (the cocktail waitresses have relatively skimping ‘uniforms’ of course), which was hilarious. Ms.Bungle also had a really great costume as Lady Luck. Unfortunately I don’t have any pictures as cameras are fairly verboten in the casino.

In the evening we went to Izakaya to celebrate. A few of us decided to credit card roulette for the bill (there were a few buyouts), and amazingly Nina Williams was the first card out again. We all dismayed when this occurred. estornudo (the loser from last time) was next, followed by allstarrt, and BigBadBabar. That left me heads up with fivecardarmy, the trip’s token No Limit player. He lucked out and I picked up the check.

AC Fall 2009 Trip, Day 7

Posted in Poker Hands, Trip Reports tagged , , , , , , , at 6:35 pm by pygmyhero

Fresh fruit is pretty hard to come by in the casino. BigBadBabar and I both eat a lot of fruit, so we tend to buy up quite a bit from our favorite breakfast spot, Bread & Butter. The other day I picked up a banana for BBB and brought it and a sandwich back up to the room for him.

While he was eating his sandwich allstarrt began making a series of ninja-like poses that I only wish I could describe verbally. He then ran over to the bed where BBB was sitting and delivered a karate chop to the banana.

Although the banana was still edible (but clearly dented) BBB decided to NOT eat it. He decided a better option was to also karate chop the banana. This degenerated quickly and BBB at one point ended up having allstarrt hold the banana and then karate chopping it into the wall.

Here’s a 3-bet that I think would be pretty easy to miss live:

I open Ah Js in MP and get called in a few spots.
Flop is Jh 8h 5h, BB checks his hand (but ONLY one card), I bet, and BB calls.
Turn is a brick, I bet, he check/raises, and I 3-bet.

To me the key to the hand is that when people are suited they almost always know which suit they have. In my experience when people check they are looking to see if they have a single high suited card. This means that his best possible hand here is Kh Jo, which I have nutted in all sorts of ways.

Here’s a hand I think I might have botched:

Hand 1

One last funny hand:

A tight player raises UTG, someone cold calls, a poster cold calls, two more players in position cold calls, the SB cold calls, and I quietly laugh to myself that I probably can’t fold many hands here.

I look down at 53o and toss in the call.

Flop (14 SB): 7d 6d 4s (7 players)
UTG bets, 1 fold, the poster raises, 1 fold, 1 cold call, 1 fold, Hero check/raises, UTG folds, the others all call.

Turn (12 BB): 4d (3 players)
I bet, both villains call

River (15 BB): 3h (3 players)
I bet, the poster raises, 1 fold, Hero calls

Villain exclaims ‘STRAIGHT!’
I say, ‘Me too,’ and roll my hand.
He slams down pocket fives and yells, ‘How can you have a straight? I have two in my hand!’

He goes on for a minute or so and finally I quietly say, ‘How can you river a three? I have one in my hand.’

One other highlight for the day was that ottsville, AmityDewey, and me all went back to the room after dinner and had a ‘calling the wife’ party.

AC Fall 2009 Trip, Day 6

Posted in Poker Hands, Trip Reports tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 12:24 pm by pygmyhero

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Today was the best day of the trip by far. My wife made a day trip to join us for a little bit, despite her busy med school schedule. She ended up spending more time driving than she did visiting us, which is impressive dedication (also she got back well after midnight and I know she had class early the next day (today as I post this)).

Here’s her account of the day.

Given the effort involved I thought it’d be nice to treat her to a special dinner, so everyone in our group (9 of us as Nina Williams arrived today) went to Bobby Flay Steakhouse. There wasn’t much interest in doing credit card roulette for the whole bill this time, so we all just picked up our own drinks, entrees, desserts, etc. But we did share the sides, so we decided to draw for that part of the bill.

Shockingly (and dishearteningly) Nina Williams was the first safe card out of the hat. Lysistrata (my wife) was next, followed by Busting you, Amity Dewey, ottsville, allstarrt, and BigBadBabar. That left estornudo and me on the hook, and amazingly I won the flip.

However, we did take a picture of the bill, which AmityDewey is going to send to his wife, saying he lost at credit card roulette (a la aumorgan last trip).

Anyway, it was a great dinner and a wonderful day. I didn’t play much poker, but it was a great break about halfway through the trip to see my wife again.

Sweating is +EV Example 1

BBB comes over to sweat me and I pick up Ad Jd in EP. I raise and 5 of us see a flop of 6d 4c 3d. I bet and 4 of us go to the turn, which is the 9d. I bet and get two calls. The river is an offsuit 7, a player donks, I raise and get paid off by his obvious straight. I tip BBB a $1 chip for the sweat.

Sweating is +EV Example 2

Two hands later allstarrt walks over and I pick up Ac Qc UTG. I raise and get a cold call by a player in position. I bet the Qh Qd 4s flop, get raised, and call. The turn is a brick and I check/raise. The river is also a blank and I get paid off by trips with a worse kicker. I tip allstarrt a $1 chip (which I assume was later lost to the roulette wheel).
